jesus-isthe-reasonfor-theseason-2In my first family home evening and family scripture study book, I had a whole month of FHE lessons and scriptures devoted to Christmas. It was great! The problem was that things went right over my kids’ heads since they were pretty young at the time. Book two was tailored to kids ages eight and under, and I only have one lesson on Christmas in it. Book three, FHEasy, also has only one lesson on Christmas.

Now that my kids are older, I decided to revisit the approach I used in my first FHE-FSS book and share some of the quotes from Church leaders about Christmas. Below are seven Christ-centered Christmas quotes for you to enjoy. Feel free to share them all at once during FHE, print them and tape them up, or read one every day along with the daily scriptures in FHEasy.

Enjoy and Happy Home Evenings!

“I, with you, have witnessed during the past few days and weeks what has become over the years the annual commercialization of Christmas. I am saddened to see Christmas becoming less and less about Christ and more and more about marketing and sales, parties and presents.

And yet, Christmas is what we make of it. Despite all the distractions, we can see to it that Christ is at the center of our celebration. If we have not already done so, we can establish Christmas traditions for ourselves and for our families which will help us capture and keep the spirit of Christmas.” (President Monson, 2011 Christmas Devotional)

I believe that such would be true for all of us as we reminisce concerning our best-remembered Christmases. Bringing the Christmas spirit into our hearts and homes takes conscious effort and planning but can surely be accomplished.” (President Monson, 2010 Christmas Devotional)

flower_wreath-grayscale “Christmas is really about the Christ.  Christmas and some of the cherished traditions of the season remind us that we, like the Wise Men of old, should seek the Christ and lay before Him the most precious of gifts: a broken heart and a contrite spirit. We should offer Him our love. We should give Him our willingness to take upon ourselves His name and walk in the path of discipleship. We should promise to remember Him always, to emulate His example, and to go about doing good.” (President Uchtdorf, 2011 Christmas Devotional)

flower_wreath-grayscale“Of course, we do not need a Christmas holiday or Christmas traditions to remember Jesus Christ, our Savior. But the celebrations of Christmas can help remind us of Him. The hallowed Christmas season can be an opportunity to recommit to keep the fire of the Spirit and the glory of the Son of God burning in our hearts every day throughout the year.” (President Uchtdorf, 2011 Christmas Devotional)

flower_wreath-grayscale“Recently, as I’ve reminisced concerning past Christmases, I’ve realized that probably no other time of the year yields as many poignant memories as does Christmas. The Christmases we remember best generally have little to do with worldly goods, but a lot to do with families, with love, and with compassion and caring.” (President Monson, 2009 Christmas Devotional)flower_wreath-grayscale“Sometimes the most precious and sacred things are right in front of us, in plain sight, but we cannot or will not see them…This may be especially true during the blessed and precious season of Christmas…Sometimes, despite our best intentions, we become so preoccupied with responsibilities, commitments, and the stress of our many tasks that we fail to see with our hearts that which is essential and most sacred… [However,] I promise that if we unclutter our lives a little bit and in sincerity and humility seek the pure and gentle Christ with our hearts, we will see Him, we will find Him—on Christmas and throughout the year.” (President Uchtdorf, 2009 Christmas Devotional)

flower_wreath-grayscale“This is a season of rejoicing! A season of celebration! A wonderful time when we acknowledge that our Almighty God sent His Only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ, to redeem the world! To redeem us!

It is a season of charitable acts of kindness and brotherly love. It is a season of being more reflective about our own lives and about the many blessings that are ours. It is a season of forgiving and being forgiven.

But perhaps most of all, let it be a season of seeking the Lamb of God, the King of Glory, the Everlasting Light of the World, the Great Hope of Mankind, the Savior and Redeemer of our souls.” (President Uchtdorf, 2009 Christmas Devotional)
