Today I want to share with you a fun object lesson that I use in FHEasy in the “Sabbath Day Observance” lesson: making a yummy sundae (BTW – This activity was adapted from Richard R. Eubank’s book Is There an Object to Your Lesson?, page 66.)
Set out a couple flavors of ice cream and several normal ice cream toppings like chocolate and caramel syrups, nuts, and sliced bananas. Get a bowl and put some vanilla ice cream in it. Then top it with ketchup, mustard, mayo, pickles, and sauerkraut (hamburger toppings). All the while, say things like, “Which flavor should I choose? Well, I sure do like vanilla. I guess I’ll do that. Now, what should I put on for toppings. Hm. Well, I love mayonnaise. Oh, yes. And I just love ketchup. Let’s see, what else … hm … I hear sauerkraut is really good for digestion and I’d hate to get a stomach ache from all this ice cream, so I better put some sauerkraut on there, too.” Etc., etc., etc.
For those who haven’t seen this object lesson before, it usually thoroughly grosses out kids and also amuses adults.
The point is that some things go really well on hamburgers, but not so well on ice cream sundaes. Likewise, some activities are great on weekdays and Saturdays, but not so great on Sundays.
You can then read this quote by President Nelson before inviting everyone to make their own sundaes.
“How can you ensure that your behavior on the Sabbath will lead to joy and rejoicing? In addition to your going to church, partaking of the sacrament, and being diligent in your specific call to serve, what other activities would help to make the Sabbath a delight for you?” (“The Sabbath Is a Delight,” Ensign, May 2015)
This can be a very fun home evening for any family or even for a big family reunion.
From me to you, here’s to …
Happy Home Evenings!
