Wow! What an amazing conference! For the FHE following conference we simply talked about what stood out to us as we watched conference. My two older girls and my husband all talked about Carl Cook’s story about his grandpa hollering, “Per ‘er in compound, Dorothy!” They remembered the visual of the gears working together. I also remembered his fun quote:
Whether we are overwhelmed or underwhelmed, whether we are scared to death or bored to death, the Lord wants us to gear down, power up, and serve.
I loved Elder Renlund’s talk titled “Repentance: A Joyful Choice.” I always like to think of repentance as joyfully turning back toward the Lord. It seems clear, simple, and guilt-free to just face the Lord fully again. And as a linguist, I liked that the Swedish word for repentance means “to turn around”. Like I said … simple.
I also like Elder Renlund’s perspective-giving quote from Shakespeare,
What win I, if I gain the thing I seek?
A dream, a breath, a froth of fleeting joy.
Who buys a minute’s mirth to wail a week,
Or sells eternity to get a toy?
One of my favorite talks and one I will study more in the future was President Nelson’s talk on joy. What a great example of a radiant man! He always makes me smile. Here’s a great quote from him:
When the focus of our lives is on Jesus Christ and His gospel, we can feel joy regardless of what is happening—or not happening—in our lives.
